In 1994, Gabriela and Mathieu Sismann opened their first stand at the Puces de Saint‑Ouen. In 1995, they founded their gallery in Paris. From the Louvre des Antiquaires to the prestigious Quai Voltaire, over thirty‑two years of activity they have built a reputation as leaders in the international market for early sculpture and have become key references for collectors, enthusiasts, and professionals devoted to this niche field. Located opposite the Pavillon Flore—where the couple first met as students at the École du Louvre—the Galerie Sismann is a unique and now essential destination, dedicated without distinction to European sculpture from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Classical and Baroque periods, up to the late eighteenth century. The gallery is distinguished above all by its ability to bring to light forgotten masterpieces of early sculpture, sourced from the art market or from private collections. Guided by their sensitivity, deep knowledge, and exceptional eye, Gabriela and Mathieu approach acquisitions as a quest for rare, overlooked, or neglected works, taking it as their mission to recontextualize them, rediscover their authors, and identify their original destinations. Research lies at the heart of this process, drawing on the couple’s specialized library as well as institutional archives and online databases. The conclusions of these studies are validated in advance by an international network of specialized consultants from academia and museums, and ultimately published. As independent dealers, Gabriela and Mathieu place research and excellence at the core of their practice. They acquire their discoveries with rigor, study them meticulously before attributing and publishing them, and finally present them in their gallery or at fairs.
Researchers at heart, but also driven by a reflection on spirituality and the crucible of artistic creation, the Sismanns champion early sculpture with passion, enriching the collections of leading private collectors and major museums such as the Musée du Louvre (Paris), Musée National du Moyen Âge (Paris), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), Musée National de la Renaissance (Écouen), Palais des Beaux‑Arts de Lille, Musée des Beaux‑Arts de Strasbourg, Fondation Lambert (Avignon), Tassenmuseum (Amsterdam), Wyvern Foundation (London), Katoen Natie Art Foundation (Antwerp), Palais Fesch – Musée des Beaux‑Arts (Ajaccio), Residenz Museum (Munich), Fondation Gandur pour l’Art (Geneva), the Alana Collection (New York), Palazzo Ducale (Mantua), Musea Brugge (Bruges), Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam), the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Namur, the Château de Lunéville, the Musée Sainte‑Croix de Poitiers, and Wawel Castle (Kraków).
Internationally recognized for its expertise in the field of early European sculpture, Galerie Sismann supports private clients and institutions in the acquisition and sale, advisory and valuation, as well as the authentication and appraisal of sculptures dating from the twelfth to the eighteenth century.
