This seductive bust of a young woman wearing a wreath of flowers and depicted three-quarters to the right, is part of a coveted corpus of small-scale terracotta works executed in the years 1780-1800 by Clodion's most famous pupil, Joseph-Charles Marin, for a wealthy private clien-tele. With its meticulous attention to detail, the elegant treatment of its subject's hair and the sensual treatment of its chairs, this bust can be compared to a group of terracottas executed by the master depicting fauns and bacchantes. The charm of this voluptuous composition is height-ened by our subject's irresistible, slightly half-open-lipped face and indolent gaze, which illus-trate Marin's skill and artistic sensitivity. Through this bust, the artist offers us a glimpse of the gallant and entertaining spirit of the works of the Age of Enlightenment, which was also, and perhaps above all in the arts, that of Pleasure.
