The subject of a major monographic exhibition organised by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in 2003, Willem Danielsz. van Tetrode is recognised as one of the most innovative and influential sculptors of the late 16th century. Originally from the Netherlands, this prodigious pupil and collaborator of the great Benvenutto Cellini brought back to his homeland, after more than twenty years spent in Italy, an in-depth knowledge of Renaissance antiquities and sculpture that he synthesised in remarkable fashion in small bronzes capturing the emotions of the human figure in violent poses or movements. This breathtaking Flagellator, rediscovered by the Galerie Sismann, is a superb example.
